Three Thursday Items

The Judiciary Committee had a meeting today, but no appellate nominations were considered. A hearing is scheduled for February 6.

We previously mentioned that a leading contender for Justice Alito's seat on the Third Circuit is Noel Hillman. Here's a recent article mentioning that prospect ("If Hillman is nominated, this might be an opportune time for the Republicans in the Senate to get to the meat of the Berger affair").

sheesh, it reads almost like our friend railing against Kavanaugh for Vince Foster back some months ago, doesn't it?

Re: WND link by evanm85

Yeah...without Clinton Conspiracy Conservatives, WND's got nothing.

The relevant section of the article is buried at the absolute bottom, by the by.

I don't know if that WND by AndrewHyman

I don't know if that WND article is credible or not, but figured it couldn't hurt to link it. Certainly, the author lays it on a bit thick with the "the meat of the Berger affair."

I have yet to read Supreme Conflict, but one of the teasers thrown out there by Greenburg was that during the course of interviewing Justice Stevens, he informed her of the exact date that he plans to retire. She then goes on to not answer that question. Is it in the book or was that part of a separate interview or just off the record?

Gutierrez, and Valerie L. Baker, each to be United States District Judge for the Central District of California, Lawrence Joseph O'Neill, to be United States District Judge for the Eastern District of California, and Gregory Kent Frizzell, to be United States District Judge for the Northern District of Oklahoma.

Boring by Matthew Friendly

Pretty boring stuff (or lack of even boring stuff) on the judges' front these days. I guess this is what we'll have to get used to with a Dem Senate and a lame duck president.

It still makes no sense not to have been prepared to name nominees to the vacancies on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th, which have been known for quite some time. Again, solid Republican-nominated judges, even if not overtly conservative or originalist in their jurisprudence, are preferable to ANY nominees a Democrat might name. So, Mr. President, please don't wait too long into these last two years to nominate judges. They'll get nowhere, and then we'll have to pray for a Giuliani/McCain/Romney to win and nominate them rather than a Hillary Rotten Clinton/Osama Obama/Ambulance Chaser Edwards.

Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-are.

The country was has a continuous leftward drift precisely because both the liberal and conservative movements have leaders that are far to the left of their respective memberships. The country will only turn to the right when rank-and-file conservatives demand actual conservatives lead them.
