Leahy Questioning

From Reid Cox, CFIF General Counsel: (I'll be posting comments from Reid throughout the day.)
Many observers may be bored or not understand the tremendous importance of the questioning by Senator Leahy right now. But with the War on Terrorism, these questions about the extent of Executive Power are extremely important. Especially in a War waged by terrorists who act quickly, independently and fatally, the government must be able to respond quickly and nimbly, and this must mean the Executive should be able to respond without needing approval from the legislature, which tends to take a much longer time for response.
In other words, our national defense and offense against the terrorists would be much worse off if we have to have command and control in 535 people in the legislature rather than in a single commander-in-chief.
In fact, though the Dems are mistakenly trying to tag Judge Roberts with the Hurricane Katrina disaster, what that disaster did demonstrate is that the country cannot adequately respond to real crises when there are too many people trying to control the response. There must be a single, in-charge decisionmaker  the commander-in-chief  and not hundreds of politicians milling around the halls of Congress.
