Losing Our Religion

So far, I've only posted once or twice on the big brouhaha (or maybe "kerfuffle" is the more current term) regarding Senator Frist's planned speech to a religious assembly. I haven't had much to say about it. But, here's some interesting info: renowned left-leaning NYU historian and educator Jonathan Zimmerman (author of Whose America? Culture Wars in the Public Schools) criticizes the Dems for trying to exclude religion from the filibuster debate:

Every great movement for social justice in America has been powered by religious sentiment. Instead of demanding that conservatives omit religion from politics, liberals should reclaim the religious mantle themselves.

Jon Zimmerman's article is in the Christian Science Monitor. Like the REM song, the article is titled "Losing Our Religion." (Jon's an old friend from summer camp, and thus the link to amazon.com. :-) In any event, his article is very useful and informative.) By the way, you can catch photos of Kerry and Edwards speaking at religious events here.
