Reflections on Day 1

A few random thoughts as I decompress at the end of a long day...

(1) The expectation for Judge Roberts were very high entering the day. He exceeded all of them. His remarks were simply extraordinary. And there can simply be no question that Judge Roberts will be an outstanding Chief Justice. Likewise, if anyone had doubts about Judge Roberts' judicial philosophy, they have now been put to rest.

(2) Senator Coburn's remarks were outstanding. This is my favorite quote:

America is an idea; it's not competing ideologies. It's an idea that has proven tremendously successful and, when we reduce it to that of competing ideologies, we make it less than what it is. I believe the genius of our founders is that they recognized that individual rights were derived from a creator, not a king, not a court, not a legislature or a state.

(3) The Left's performance was pathetic. First, the much-boasted about protestors never really materialized. And the Democrats' performance in their opening statements was generally abyssmal. Ultimately, this is nothing more than an indication that the Left is sitting this one out and getting ready for the next fight. But the absence of any real offensive today was something of a surprise. I also think we're likely to see a lot more fireworks tomorrow.

(4) On that note... get ready to hear a lot about cross-town busing, quotas and Title IX on Tuesday. Those will be the Left's main lines of attack. The response is simple: yet again, the Democrats are pressing the failed policies of the past. We strive for real equality for everyone, not preferences for some and equality for none.

Tomorrow is likely to be the craziest of the week, but I'll try to post as often as I can from my perch on Capitol Hill.
